Believe it or not, there are some practical uses for dryer lint. Here are three:

1. Since dryer lint is simply clean cotton and other fibers, it is a perfect filler for giving stuffed animals a little more bulk when needed.
2. Dryer lint is a good source of bedding for pets – like your gerbils, hamsters, and mice.
3. If you like a wood fire in the fall and winter, save your lint, put it in an empty toilet paper roll, and wrap it with newspaper, tucking in the ends. It’s an easy fire starter with a clean burn.

Since we’re on dryer lint, be sure to clean out your dryer exhaust hose twice a year. The hose can build up more lint that you expect. So if you need extra filler or bedding, the hose is another source.

Follow this guidance when cleaning and conditioning smooth leather like most boots, jackets, and furniture:

Cleaning:

1. If the leather is dirty or dusty, use a water-moistened cloth to remove the crud.
2. Use a clean microfiber cloth if you have one, or a soft cotton cloth. Prepare a 50:50 mix of white vinegar and water. With a circular motion, apply the mixture to loosen and remove the dirt from the leather fibers. Return the cloth to the vinegar/water mixture several times and wring out. Don’t use dirty mixture. Don’t soak it. Just clean it.
3. Allow the leather to dry before conditioning the leather.

Conditioning:

4. Apply a mixture of 1 part white vinegar and 2 parts linseed oil or flaxseed oil in small circular motions using a clean microfiber cloth. Let the mixture stay on the leather overnight.
5. The next morning, using a clean microfiber cloth, wipe off any excess mixture and buff the leather.

That’s it!

But, dress shirts aren’t perfect and how you go about caring for dress shirts in your closet will contribute greatly to the look and longevity of this most versatile of wardrobe pieces.

Caring for dress shirts includes having them laundering regularly.  While laundering or dry cleaning any garment causes some stress on the garment, allowing it to get soiled and not cleaning is regularly causes more stress.  Launder your dress shirts regularly to keep them looking their best.

The Stain Solution

You can’t prevent all stains and spills. It’s just not possible. But, you can limit and treat stains as soon as possible to keep them from becoming permanent. Talk with your dry cleaner about the best way to pre-treat a variety of stains and spots. Then, when spills and stains happen, treat them and get your shirt to the dry cleaner ASAP to be laundered. The longer the stain sits, the more likely it is to set.

No, actually variety is but not when caring for dress shirts. Set up a weekly routine of dropping off and picking up your shirts. The longer they sit around in a crumpled ball in the corner of your room (you know it’s over there), the more likely they are exposed to indoor pollutants and those elements like rain, perspiration and cologne that cause problems for dress shirts.
