Champion Cleaners Founders

In November 2002, David and Sherry Whitehurst opened the first location of Champion Cleaners on Rocky Ridge Road in Vestavia Hills, Alabama.  Since then they have grown to three additional locations including Greystone on Highway 280, Calera and Crestline in Mountain Brook.   

David is a CPA (retired – which means to him that “he Couldn’t Pass Again).  Over the first 30 years of his career, David held a variety of corporate positions in financial institutions, including Chief Financial Officer, President, and CEO and Director of a publicly-held company.

In 2017, David & Sherry’s son, Mark, joined the business and assumed responsibilities as General Manager of Champion Cleaners.

Mark has undergraduate and graduate degrees for the University of Alabama. He has 18 years of financial and management experience. Mark is a CPA and worked with PriceWaterhouseCoopers for 4 years. He moved into a financial role with Saks for 4 years when it was in Birmingham. When Saks relocated its corporate office out of Alabama, he moved to the Noland Health Services in Birmingham in a financial role with their Nursing Home operations and Hospital. He was there for 10 years before joining Champion Cleaners in October 2017.

Mark is married to Jana (Scott) and live in Riverchase with their three children, Mason, Campbell and Callie.

Ric Pevey

Ric is the Plant Manager at our Calera operation with responsibilities for our core retail dry cleaning business, our Maytag Equipped Coin Laundry and our textile and electronics restoration business, CRDN of Birmingham. Ric and his wife, Carolyn, live in Calera so he’ll have a short commute. They have two adult children, Cole and Mabrylane. They are a bright and talented family. If you live in Calera, you probably know the Pevey family.

Terry joined Champion Cleaners in 2003 as a Customer Service Representative. He quickly showed interest in the technical aspects of dry cleaning. With practical, hands-on experience supplemented by industry training courses, Terry attained the ultimate in dry cleaning credentials, the Certified Garment Care Professional (CGCP) after completing the professional designations of Certified Professional Drycleaner(CPD), Certified Environmental Drycleaner (CED) and Certified Professional Wetcleaner (CPW). Terry is one of fewer than 100 such individuals with the CGCP designation in the United States.

Terry served as our Plant Manager at Calera for 7 years and is now our Plant Manager at Rocky Ridge. Terry and his wife, Christy, live in Clanton.

Billy Mims - Pickup and Delivery Service Route Manager for Champion Cleaners in Birmingham, AL

Billy Mims

Billy joined Champion Cleaners in 2003, initially working part time as a Customer Service Representative while he also worked full time in sales for another company. When Champion Cleaners had an opening for a Route Manager, it was a natural fit. Billy has responsibility for maintaining our high standard of service for our pickup and delivery customers and for growing our list of about 1,000 customers we visit twice a week for home and office pickup and delivery service.

Billy is married to Sheila Mims, our  Co-Manager at Greystone, and lives in Alabaster.
